Built in 1878 and carefully refurbished from 2005 to 2010, the Theatre Royal is the oldest operating wooden theatre in Australasia. The auditorium has a Historic Places Trust B classification. The refurbishment brought the theatre into the 21st century offering a multi-purpose auditorium with 330 seats capable of configuration for a variety of production styles, including traditional stage plays, music, dance, circus, cabaret, speeches, and community events.
The theatre is a sought after venue for many performing arts organizations and community groups locally, nationally and internationally.

Our first visit to a lovely oldish, but refurbished, theatre. We went to see The Dancing Queen Show, an ABBA tribute. Everything was good. Comfy seats, really aren't any bad seats in terms of view. Wine etc available at the bar at reasonable prices. We'll certainly keep an eye out for other events there.

Have attended two shows here recently. The seating is very comfortable and the acoustics are good. Lots of leg room and good view of the stage area. Recommend.

Fabulous venue in keeping with it's era. Went to a great show- Elton vs Billy Duelling Pianos - Cam and Sam from Wellington. Great night out!
