Multicultural Nelson Tasman
At Multicultural Nelson Tasman, we believe a strong multicultural community is built on a bi-cultural foundation. That’s why Te Tiriti o Waitangi is central to our work—honouring its principles while welcoming and celebrating the many cultures that make our region home.
How It All Began
Our story started in 1994, when a small group of visionary locals—many of us migrants—came together with support from the Department of Internal Affairs. We recognised the need for a space where newcomers, migrants, and former refugees could connect, be welcomed, and celebrate their identities.
In 1995, we officially incorporated as the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council—our very first name.
Our Founders
We stand on the shoulders of our founding members: Marie Lindaya, Dr Siri and Soma Wettasinghe, Hein Kolff, Penny Molnar, and Dayanira Bakshi, among many others. These passionate people helped shape a more inclusive Nelson Tasman—supporting settlement, promoting cultural pride, and building positive race relations.
